The agency has recognized through our training sessions that Solar powered irrigation system (SPIS) promises numerous benefits to both small holder famers (SHF) and Agro- Clusters and cooperatives, among which are sustainability, energy efficiency, environmentally friendly and mobility. To us at GFT, the reward for hard work is MORE work.
According to the African Development Bank, @ least 90% of agriculture in the Nigeria is rain-fed, this implies that only about 10% of Nigerian farmers practice irrigation agriculture and they are left to shoulder the burden of producing food for Africa's most populous nation when the rains cease. Soft Garden Vegetables such as; Tomatoes, Onions, Peppers and Cabbage are excellent crops for small holder irrigation solution. They are high value crops that can be harvested all year and require a fair amount of labour during the growth phase, providing income for farmers and labourers alike.
An important overarching starting point for us is to first find out what livelihoods the potential farmer has identified and then offering options and choices that are meet their constraints and cost points, beyond what is otherwise available to them.
